New batch of 4,500 images released

A new batch of 4,500 historical aerial images has been released and is now accessible on the NCAP website. The imagery was taken during the Second World War and includes cover of locations across Europe, from Norway to Italy.

Parts of two neutral countries also feature in this release. During a photographic reconnaissance sortie to German-occupied Denmark on 27 July 1942,  an aircraft of No.1 Photographic Reconnaissance Unit (1PRU) took photographs of Malmö, Sweden. These images extend our online coverage into Sweden for the first time. Similarly, on 16 August 1944 a Spitfire of 682 Squadron, RAF, collected imagery of Splüngen, Switzerland while on a sortie to Milan, Italy.

Oblique aerial images of Venice, taken just two weeks after VE-day, on 22 May 1945, are also included in this release. Taken by the 5th Photo Recon Group, USAAF, the port and starboard engine nacelles of the F-5 photographic reconnaissance aircraft are visible in images from this low altitude sortie.
