D-Day images released
6th June 2019 marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day; the Allied landings in Normandy, France. D-Day was the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe during the Second World War. It was the largest combined land, air and naval operation in history.
Over 40 British and American photographic reconnaissance aircraft were despatched to Normandy on D-Day. Flying along the beaches and routes inland, their job was to capture evidence of progress and to search for signs of German reaction.
We have digitised all Allied aerial photography of the landings held in NCAP and the US National Archives. Over 7,750 images covering Normandy on 6 June 1944 are now accessible on our website.
