Bismarck aerial images released
Aerial photographs of the battleship Bismarck, taken 75 years ago, are accessible on the NCAP website. Taken on 21 May 1941, the photographs led to the discovery, and eventual sinking, of the German battleship six days later.
The pilot, 20-year old Michael Suckling, flew the mission to Norway from his base at Wick, Scotland. On his return, he refuelled and flew south, to deliver his photographs to British intelligence, in London. Arriving in the early hours of the following morning, his prints were examined and Bismarck's identity confirmed.
