Aerial Image Becomes Work of Art
An aerial photograph from the NCAP archives has been recreated as a tapestry in commemoration of the life and work of a prominent Edinburgh politician, Councillor Elizabeth Maginnis, who died suddenly in 2008.
The tapestry, almost two metres square, was created on a digitised Jaquard loom by artist Natalie Taylor at the Audax Textile Museum in Tilburg, The Netherlands.
The work is based on an image of northern Edinburgh taken during the All Scotland Survey, flown for the Scottish Office in 1988.
Commissioned by The City of Edinburgh Council and North Edinburgh Arts, in conjunction with the Maginnis family, the finished work now hangs in the lounge of a new housing development for the elderly, the Elizabeth Maginnis Court, in Wardieburn Terrace, Edinburgh.
