Clouds of smoke from the bombs of another flight of Allied bombers can be seen in the upper-right corner of the frame. In the weeks after D-Day, Allied heavy bombers were used to carpet-bomb German-held areas inland of the Normandy beachheads, to disrupt movement of troops and armour and pave the way for planned Allied advances.
