New Film - Sightlines - Offers a Vision of the Commonwealth

Directed by Genevieve Bicknell, Sightlines is a 16-minute film inspired by historical aerial photography of Commonwealth countries, gathered throughout the second half of the 20th century, by the Directorate of Overseas Surveys (DOS).  Using the photography - which is now held by NCAP - and Super 8 cine-film taken by surveyors on their expeditions, the film explores colonialism and its consequences, as they are being played out today in a hillside village in Kenya.  Moving between the past and present - using footage shot on location - the connections between the two are unravelled, and an unexpected legacy of colonialism is revealed.

 

 

Sightlines has been produced in partnership with the Scottish Documentary Institute as part of Culture 2014. The film will be screened on a continuous loop within a purpose-designed exhibition pavilion at the following venues:

 

  • Filmhouse, Edinburgh (Premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival), Thursday 19th June 2014
  • Edinburgh College of Art, 22 - 27 June 2014
  • The Empire Cafe, Glasgow, 26 July - 1 August 2014
  • The Lighthouse, Glasgow, 7 August - 14 September 2014
