Frame details

Date: 06 June 1944
Location: Sainte-Mère-Église; Lower Normandy; France
Coordinates (lat, lon): 49.405303, -1.310868
Description: Sainte-Mère-Église was a key objective of US paratroopers, as it lay behind UTAH Beach and on the main road from Caen to Cherbourg. Driven off course by low cloud and anti-aircraft fire, US transport aircraft scattered paratroops across the countryside, often miles from their objectives. In this image, empty parachute canopies can be seen in fields at centre right, along with the ground scar of a crashed C-47 transport aircraft.
